Chapter 1 - Armageddon
With summer approaching Matthew was ready to work out something with Andrea. The relationship had hit a road bump and he wanted to work everything out with her. They had been together almost a year now, and he didn't want someone else getting between them and their close relationship. He wouldn't get the chance to see her though. Around the world, terrorists were plotting to set off a chain reaction that would lead to nuclear war.
Terrorists in Iran planned to set off nuclear bombs in Russia and China and infilitrate their command leadership to order retaliation strikes against the United States and Europe. They had several people in command of missile silos in Siberia and northern China ready to encourage a counter-attack against the "surprise U.S. strikes" when the word was given.
It worked, setting off a world war that lasted twenty minutes. Major cities all around the world were atomized into oblivion. Billions were killed instantly, and what was left untouched was fought over by the few remaining people.
Matthew happened to be one of those few people, still living after the nuclear attack... luckily he had been down in an archaic fallout shelter when the bombs started falling. Unfortunately for her, Andrea was in Baltimore at the time, and it was one of the first cities to be hit by the Russian counter-attack. She only survived seconds after the blinding flash of light, and then was vaporized as the temperature approached that of the surface of the sun. Her and billions more were wiped out.
The terrorists had succeeded in destroying the world, but they had underestimated the destructive force of all these nuclear weapons, and were caught in many of the retaliatory strikes across the Middle East. No one would ever know what started World War III, but those who were left knew how it ended... nobody won. Those who were left, like Matthew, would have to pick up the pieces and start rebuilding a newer better world.
